Her work explores the contemporary history of her homeland, Israel. She shows how current political events can coincide with the burdens of the past and how they influence everyday life in Israel. She uses the detachment of image from sound in many of her video works in order to emphasize and define the meaning of each of them separately. In doing so, she accentuates sound elements so that the viewers are forced to focus on the words because the images are missing. In “School”, Dreyfus recorded classes in high schools over a period of two years. She visited various secular state schools in Israel and revealed that the teaching methods had not changed in the past twenty years, but that the student’s reactions are more critical and questioning nowadays.

This Rohkunstbau exhibition presents Smadar Dreyfus work “360 degrees”, which she realized with Lennaart van Oldenbourgh, in 2007. It was recorded in real time at sunset on a beach located between Tel Aviv and Jaffa. The camera’s pan starts and ends in a café beside the sea that is reflected in the windowpanes. Mothers carry children on their arms, the boardwalk is full of activity, people walk around, go swimming and enjoy the sunset. The bustle continues into the upcoming darkness. The atmosphere is peaceful and reflects normality in a torn country.
