Nezaket Ekici

Using simple and everyday objects, Nezaket Ekici stages sociocritical performances that deal with current issues such as faith, politics, gender equality and the role of women. Her actions, that also involve the audience, centre around her body. She often subjects her body to extreme stress bringing the audience to their limits of endurance when they let themselves get involved in the performance.

For Rohkunstbau Nezaket Ekici will show “Permanent Words”, a performance in which she hangs upside down on a rope. Dressed with a chador that covers her, yet defies gravity because it leaves her face and hands free. She holds several sheets of paper with newspaper articles, diary entries and quotes from the Koran in her hands. They characterise the role of women in Islamic society. The artist reads its contents aloud and lets the sheets fall to the ground afterwards. The effort of this action is clearly audible. Her increasingly constricted speech emphasises the reverse image of a hanging woman, clearly also depicting the image of women that looms in the texts she has read out. With this revolutionary act, the artist reaches her physical limits; her protest is stiffled by her hanging body.
