GODsDOGs (Britta & Ron Helbig)

Is a collective of artists established in 2010 with Britta and Ron Helbig at its core. It combines painting, photography, performance and sculpture in cross-genre installations.

Infinite different pictures: GODsDOGs design a manifold universe using manipulated photography and multimedia elements ...

... alluding to baroque and postmodern philosophy alike in the process. The duo derived their inspiration from Gille Deleuze's book "The Fold: Leibniz and the Baroque", published in French in 1988. When the marble is infused with infinite folds in Gian Lorenzo Bernini's work, the postmodern thinker writes, then this is akin to a spiritual adventure that glows through marble. For the former dancers Britta and Ron Helbig, folds stands for a certain choreography of existence, where everything is interwoven with everything else, absolute opposites are a delusion and spaces are energetic media of the connection between worlds, people and perspectives.
Their installation at Lieberose Castle with the fairy-tale title "Column Space and Beam Crack" is in two parts: coloured banners evoke a chapel-like atmosphere. In the centre of the room is a collage of different materials: a conglomeration of architectural forms and inserted photographs. The photographs have great suggestive power and pictoriality and are reminiscent of Peter Doig's photorealistic, post-romantic painting. The special colour scheme and the coincidence of negative image and positive in a common pictorial space are due to the technique of pseudo-polarisation, which is also known as the Sabattier Effect. The images show children in visually charged rural or urban environments and thematise the widening demographic gap.
Why is the artist duo called GODsDOGs? Because, as Britta Helbig explains, bridging opposites – God and transcendence on the one hand, underdogs and immanence on the other – is what her artistic work is all about.
